Gretsch ‘Defender’ bass drum

Would date to the early 1940s

Made in USA during WWII

This was during metal rationing, so only 10% of the drum was allowed to be made of metal, hence the use of wooden lugs.

This bass drum shell splits in half. – this was a feature on some large drums that were made to be transported overseas with the military.

26″ x 14″ deep

8 lug

Original rods and claws. (one rod & claw is not original)

Wooden hoops

Calf skin heads – look to be original, one has Gretsch stamp on the reverse

A particularly rare and collectable drum, especially Over here n the UK
